About this good practice
The Šaleška lakes, which were created due to the sinkhole activities related to lignite mining, which has been active in the valley since the 18th century, have been polluted and unusable for decades. There were several rural settlements at the location of the nowadays lakes, which were completely submerged and destroyed. The deepest parts of the valley were filled up with water and three lakes were formed. At the time of the creation, the citizens perceived the lakes only as environmental "damage" and a problem. Lake Velenje was polluted due to coal ash, Lake Škale was organically polluted and the main environmental problem at Lake Družmirje was high consumption of lake water for the needs of the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant. The attitude of the citizens towards the lakes and the immediate surrounding was un-appropriate. The lakes were gradually becoming more and more attractive to the residents. The activities as are jogging, fishing, cycling, swimming, surfing, kayaking etc., began to take place at the nearest vicinity and the coastal area of the Šaleška lakes. The responsible companies have now begun to take care of the revitalization and rehabilitation of these flooded and strongly degraded areas. The tourist development around the lakes is now at its peak. More and more tourists are now coming to spend the time at the Velenje Beach every year. The whole valley has become a great tourist attraction.
Resources needed
The City Municipality of Velenje provides hundreds of thousands of euros annually, just for the Velenje Beach. The Budget for 2021, for the area of gastronomy and tourism was 1.022.877 €. The total annual investment of different private entities can be generalized to somewhere around few million €.
Evidence of success
More and more tourists are now coming to spend the time at the Velenje Beach every year. The data on overnight stays kept by the local tourist centre is certainly very confirming and testifies to the growing popularity of the lake area. Success can also be measured by the growing presence of investors and substantial funding of activities and infrastructure. In recent years, Velenje beach has been awarded three times for the best natural beach. The water monitoring results, are also excellent.
Potential for learning or transfer
There are many regions with similar problems and potentials across Europe. In the regions, where the employment is mostly based on the coal industry, can such actions make a visible change in the local society and employment scheme. Revitalization of the degraded area is costly, it takes a lot of time and a lot of effort, but it can make a huge difference. During every single process of restructuring and decarbonisation of a certain region, it is always necessary to look for hidden and untapped potentials, with which the impacts of the restructuring can surely be mitigated. In the SAŠA region, these potentials are certainly represented by the tourist industry developing along the lakes of the Šaleška valley. Currently, the tourism industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the region.
