This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
A Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) utilizes bio media within the bioreactor with a very large surface area to allow microorganisms to attach to the media for the removal of dissolved organic matter and nutrients. This system is more compact and is able to increase the capacity for nutrient removal in traditional plants. The implementation of the MBBR will require less space when compared to the activated sludge system while also increasing the effectiveness of the sludge retention time and a decrease in cost from energy consumption.
Resources needed
€4.25 million part-funded by the European Union under the Cohesion Fund
Evidence of success
This practice has not been implemented yet and results will be available in the near future. This practice will be an improvement on the previous system which consisted of an activated sludge treatment plant. This system will provide an additional 17,000m3/day capacity for the treatment of sewage in the south of Malta. The plant will serve to increase the sewage handling capacity in a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly process.
Potential for learning or transfer
The implementation of a MBBR technology can be used in most countries. This technology is beneficial to countries where space is an issue, as implementing it would use less land area, apart from lowering energy demand fro the treatment of wastewater.
The experience gained at the operational wastewater treatment plant will be a showcase of how the technology can be utilized in retrofitting aging wastewater treatment facilities which can't cope with increased influent volumes.
