About this good practice
Sopotniki is an organisation for intergenerational solidarity operating as a non-profit private body, registered in Slovenia's register of voluntary organisations, which has the goal of offering free transport to rural elderly and thereby help them get involved in an active social life. The free transport service enables elders to attend cultural events, visit friends, go to the doctor, go shopping, etc. In this way they can run their errands independently and carefree as well as make new acquaintances and keep social contacts with the wider environment, which would otherwise be out of reach. The volunteer drivers of different ages and occupations have adapted their work and study obligations in such way that they can in turn provide the service six days a week, from morning and until the last passenger arrives home safely. This service covers small villages and towns outside Ljubljana Urban Region (in the municipalities of Hrpelje-Kozina, Divača, Sežana, Sevnica, Brežice, Krško, Kočevje, Postojna, Pivka, Ajdovščina and Ankaran-Ancarano). The service is considered an innovative approach towards the mobility of rural elders which will soon expand to many other parts of Slovenia. The relations between volunteers and users are considered as added value. They are based on trust, a sense of security and respect.
The main stakeholders involved are volunteer drivers; rural population and elders; and the main beneficiaries are elder people living in rural areas.

Resources needed
Currently it’s been financed from three sources: donations from supporters and satisfied users, corporate donations and by municipalities.
Evidence of success
Sopotniki have already transported more than 700 elderly. It's sucessfulness is allowing the expansion to other municipalities. Sopotniki are an example of sharing service in the transport sector, contributing to the promotion of low carbon transport. The results are: old people do not need to possess a car; the use of cars is optimized; provides services in low-density areas; ensures inclusion and social integration of elderly; greater cohesion in terms of accessibility and in social terms.
Potential for learning or transfer
Sopotniki is a solution that simplifies the mobility of elderly from remoted rural areas where the public transport is absent. The practice encourages the transfer to other Slovenian municipalities as well as cross-border cooperation and presents the following principles:
- Encourage active life for elderly, supporting autonomy and offering assistance where needed;
- Allow elderly to attend to cultural events and have active social life;
- Is an experience, while driving, passengers and drivers exchange experiences, advice or just chat, bridging the gap between the younger and the elderly;
- Respect for the environment, trying to optimize the number of trips in such a way that more passengers share the same routes on the same routes;
- Support volunteering, participating in the promotion of awareness of volunteering.
The organization has received much positive feedback, both from the drivers and from the users.
