About this good practice
The intervention was started by the Municipality of Cagliari in 2011, on the wave of approval of the "Cycle Path of the Salt" which finally united City, Port, Park, and the Beach sustainably.
For the first time, the space dedicated to cars in the city has been reduced by assigning a small part of the roads to the cycle paths. The action, still in progress, immediately affected some important urban roads of the Center (Via Giudicati, Dante, Sonnino, Paoli), and later also some peripheral districts: Is Mirrionis, Sant'Avendrace, Il CEP.
The surprise for the "City of the car" was great, but still generates protests, as the parking space is reduced, and the merchants attribute the sales crisis to the reduction of parking opportunities.
Instead, the reaction of pedestrians and cyclists is optimal, fascinated by the prospect of different mobility, based on a city that is finally pedaled, supported by a complete cycle network, which supports those who wish to avoid the use of cars, at least for short urban routes.
However, the limit linked to the fragmentation of the network is still strong, which is often interrupted leaving the cyclist amid congested urban traffic.
So that the slopes are appreciated by the "usual" cyclist, but the families still do not use a cycling network insufficient to guarantee a feeling of safety. Over the next two years, the intervention will be completed, with a noticeable effective reduction of the cycling risk perceived in the city

Evidence of success
Despite many limitations, the Cagliari cycle paths have increased the safety of cyclists on many busy urban roads
• 2011 - ISTAT Census: 0.4% use the bike for work.
• 2015-16 CRP-CIREM Research of the Regional Programming Center and University of Cagliari: (2000 respondents, at the end of the first important interventions (the salt itinerary, urban cycle paths):
4.56% of the sample declares the daily use of the bike for work
5.01% "several times a week."

Potential for learning or transfer
Despite many limitations the judgment of those who ride bicycles, and of most pedestrians, is still positive: the city shares the need to progressively improve the extension and quality of cycle paths, extending them to the entire urban area.
the wide range of solutions adopted, within an urban context characterized by low cycling penetration, and high vehicular traffic allows those who have to face similar problems to verify the quality and limits of the different solutions, always oriented to a difficult compromise with the " car rights ".
Thanks to the planned interventions of completion, the cycle routes will no longer stop in traffic, and finally, even families and weak users will be able to circulate safely.
The monitoring of the results obtained will be an important verification moment
