Insights and takeaway messages

The online cluster meeting on waste prevention aimed at presenting the projects of the first and second call working on waste prevention and related circular economy topics and at identifying synergies, opportunities for collaboration as well as topics for future events and deliverables of the Policy Learning Platform.

In this context, the following subjects for collaboration and follow-up have been put forward:

  • Sharing economy and repair services have been discussed as key features for improving waste prevention and for creating jobs at local level.

  • Understanding and assessing behaviour (attitudes, habits) and how choices are being made with regard to waste prevention were proposed as interesting topics for future events. This topic can be combined with awareness-raising measures and education of different target groups i.e. schools as well as the collection of data.

  • Green Public Procurement was underlined as a key tool to be used by public authorities to advance waste prevention. The thematic experts can provide an overview of good practices that have featured GPP in order to reduce waste.

  • Separate collection at source is still a challenge for many local authorities and was proposed for discussion.

  • The participants identified the following specific waste fractions that require particular attention with regard to waste prevention: Single Use Plastics (SUP), food waste, textiles waste and bulky waste.

  • Following the presentation of the MINEV project, the participants voiced a lot of interest in the topic of sustainable events and strategies on how to prevent waste / littering in public spaces. In this context, the Sustainability | Gothenburg Culture Festival (goteborgskulturkalas.se) has been mentioned as good practice to be shared. Moreover, the Thematic experts offered to provide a helpdesk with the good practices on sustainable events from the previous programming period.

On 12 September from 10:00 to 11:30 CEST, the Policy Learning Platform is hosting an online discussion for Interreg Europe projects focusing on waste prevention.

The session will bring together several project partners working on waste prevention to discuss the project focus and aspects that could support project development

The discussion will start with an introduction round, followed by an exchange to identify areas of mutual activities such as joint webinars, matchmakings and sharing of documents, to foster close cooperation among all partners working on the waste prevention topic.

The event is by invite only.
