About the project
Objective:
To preserve, restore, promote and deploy the rich cultural and industrial heritage of traditional and historic railways, in developing creative, cultural, smart and sustainable tourism products and services, for growth and jobs particularly in less developed, lagging and post-industrial regions.
Description:
Railways are an important part of Europe’s industrial and cultural heritage. The operation of heritage trains brings that history alive. In addition to their education value, heritage railways provide a welcome boost to sustainable tourism development, often in areas devoid of the more traditional tourism attractions, as well as a rewarding leisure pursuit for both visitor and volunteer worker (for creative tourism products and activities). Traditional, old skills are maintained and passed onto younger generations. Employment is generated not only indirectly in tourism, but also directly for specialist contractors and for essential staff of heritage and tourist railways.
