green-blue schoolyards

About this good practice
Regular schoolyards are large paved areas where problems with heat and heavy rainfall occur. Child well-being is at risk and it impacts the neighbourhood in a negative way. The project Green Blue Revolution Schoolyards provides a solution to this problem by adding greenery and removing pavement. After the transformation there is room for play and exercise in an attractive green, shady and cool environment that is better for children’s wellbeing. The schoolyard contributes to biodiversity, adds value for the neighbourhood and provides more space where infiltration is possible. Additionally the project increases awareness of climate and biodiversity by involving the children in the design of the schoolyard. The project is partially financed by the school in question and partially by the regional collaboration platform Waterpanel North. The platform Waterpanel North is a collaboration between 15 municipalities, Water board Limburg and Water supply company Limburg.
Resources needed
Every school that has applied for the program receives a financial impulse of maximum 13.500 euro. The rest of the costs are financed by the school itself. The program facilitates the participation, design and construction of the schoolyard with help from a Green Blue Schoolyard Coach.
Evidence of success
The municipalities in the regional collaboration platform Waterpanel North put their finances together to help schools to transform their schoolyards. The collaboration already helped to transform 37 schoolyards and many more will follow.
Potential for learning or transfer
This practice is a collaboration between the primary school and municipality. The initiative 'Green-Blue Revolution Schoolyards' is a successful project that emerged from the regional collaboration platform Waterpanel North and the associated communication platform Waterklaar (Waterready).
