Apple orchard in the city – Bełchatów City, Poland
About this good practice
Apple Orchard - a project implemented by Belchatow City Hall as an alternative to a conventional city park. Main idea behind the project was to create a kind of utility garden in the city, which combined the recreational and leisure functions with the benefit of fruit. The orchard also has an educational character for all visitors as well as an essential role as an element of the ecological corridor, food source and habitat for animals. In total, in the Apple Orchard more than
2 000 plants were planted, including several varieties of old high-stemmed apple trees, fruit shrubs (currant, gooseberry, quince) and Vines. Attention was also paid to elements of small architecture, such as a footbridge on the river, waste bins, benches or monitoring. There are apple symbols on all those elements which refer to the place and the symbol of the city of Bełchatów itself. The orchard is the first phase of a larger project - "Energy, Nature, Tradition - on the Bełchatów route" aimed at preparing three tourist trails around the city. Those who will want to walk along the routes will be able to use audio guides.
Resources needed
The programme was co-financed by European funds. The cost of creating an orchard was ca. 900 000 PLN.
Evidence of success
According to the plan of the project's author many people use this space as a resting place since it is located in the city center (Belchatow has 55 000 inhabitants). Additionally the orchard has an important role as an element of the ecological corridor, food source and a habitat for biodiversity in the urban area. In the orchard more than 126 different, traditional species of plants were planted.
Potential for learning or transfer
The practice can be applied in all regions with a problem of traditional orchards vanishing. It can be used also as an inspiration for raising knowledge about old fruit species and varieties. A Festival of Apple Art is celebrated in September each year in Bełchatów. The idea of the festival is to appreciate and promote native artists who present their products and works inspired by the symbol of the apple. Also restaurants and pubs serve dedicated menus based on apple.
