Changing our relationship to consumption - The Gratiferias
About this good practice
During Gratiferias, people are encouraged to drop off items they no longer need and agree to donate them, without expecting anything in return. Those who wish to do so can then help themselves for free, whether or not they have anything to offer, it doesn't matter. So it's not barter, because there's not necessarily any reciprocity.
It should also be noted that a gratiferia is not necessarily limited to objects. Intangible goods can also be offered: artistic or musical performances, exchanges of skills, etc.
Initiatives in favour of free services are multiplying. They run counter to the dominant idea that all services must be paid for. What's more, they open up horizons other than market relationships, and are a step towards a gradual change in our relationship to consumption.
It's one of the very few places where you're not limited by the contents of your wallet. What's more, it's a great way to forge new links with people who are passing by or taking part in the event.
These initiatives require a great deal of communication and commitment from participants and volunteers. They often require subsidies.
The organisers of these actions are organisations or groups whose aim is to help transform consumer society.
Resources needed
- Gratiféria: Requires skills in communication and event organisation. Venues, tables and other equipment may need to be hired
Evidence of success
Gratiferia: last one organised by ALOEN : 130 participants and 150 kg of objects donated and taken back. 12 volunteers.
Potential for learning or transfer
This action, which advocates frugality, could be an inspiration for other regions, as it aims to raise awareness of the consumption of objects and our impact on the environment by offering concrete alternative solutions: donating instead of throwing.
To set it up (for the 3 sub-actions) you need :
- A support structure (association, collective, local authority, etc.)
- Organisational and communication skills.
- Involvement of volunteers.
- A venue, which can be temporary but which needs storage space.
