About this good practice
The project Chestnut was approved under Cross border Cooperation Program 2000-2006. The main objective was valuing territory on the basis of endogenous resources in order to boots rural economy through keep cultural tradition. The project consists in two parts: through building a Development Centre to researching and testing new varieties; and created pilot plots. This Center is financed by itself, it provide different services, like advise farmers, make test and others agricultural issues. The pilot plots give us useful information for our advise service.
The area of intervention was rural, with specific features: low density, lack of capable organizations. The project gets an important achievement that was joined chestnut producer to boost their plots (261 Ha with around 38.000 chestnut trees) and of course their benefit. All producers offered their plots to test new varieties diseases resistant. The results will be in a long term due to producing chestnut tree and it’s a way to sustainable area.
The beneficiaries are the producer themselves and the business which can get better product. We should have in mind that this intervention area is one of the most chestnut producer.

This project was funded by the Cross border Cooperation Program and it had the subvention for all partners 2.127.500€
Evidence of success
From the Institutions get a good collaboration between producers and business is the better way to boost the economy of rural areas.
261 Ha. And around 38.000 new chestnut trees are evidence that will be a favourable result. the most important bussiness chesnut sell (584 workers) set a new facility in Ourense, recently, it mean the importance of this sector in our Region.

Potential for learning or transfer
The project can be transferred to other regions like a good way to public-private collaboration. Moreover, it is a way of life for rural areas to boost their economy maintaining traditions.
