Conservation and recovery of dune habitats in the sites of: Provinces of Cagliari, Matera, Caserta
Published on 10 September 2018

This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
Critical issues identified: Uncontrolled vehicular access to the dune areas; Uncontrolled pedestrian traffic with the creation of walkways and foot traffic; Coastal erosion and lack of knowledge of the effects deriving from pressures and impacts on the sedimentology of the sites and on the substrate of the habitats; Poor knowledge among users of the value and importance of dune habitats.
Preparatory actions and development of management plans:
1.Sedimentological studies and marine-coastal dynamics; 2. Start-up and operation of the remote control system of extreme events and their impact
3. Analysis of the impact of use on habitats;
Concrete conservation actions: Creation of a floristic-vegetational and abiotic database;
Actions to raise awareness and disseminate results: Implementation and placement of information panels.
Project coordination and management actions: 1. Project management and operation of the project steering committee; 2. Technical-scientific coordination and direction.
Stakeholders:
Province of Caserta
Province of Matera
University of Cagliari
(Coastal and Marine Geomorphology Group)
TECLA Association

Evidence of success
After preliminary geobotanical studies about dune systems and a detailed mapping of habitats for the characterization of Juniperus
oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa coenosis, were made transects and permanent plots to review and monitor the recruitment in relation to the intensity of human disturbance.
It has begun to address problems relating to the conservation of dune systems in relation to human impacts.

Potential for learning or transfer
The project represents a good practice to identify threats and present critical factors of dune systems in relation to human impacts.
