Dell EMC / CIT develop MSc in Cloud Computing

Problem addressed: The Irish government have identified cloud computing as the future of technology which has the ability to revolutionise the operation of businesses in Ireland and across Europe. However, a significant skills shortage and pipeline for talent exists.
How objectives are reached: Through the development of the world’s first suite of Masters and Undergraduate Degree programmes in Cloud Computing. Designed to be delivered remotely or on campus, the one year courses address future industry skills requirements and strengthen Ireland’s advancement as an international Cloud Computing Centre of Excellence.
The main stakeholders are Dell EMC and the Cork Institute of Technology.

Resources needed
The costs of the online and physical courses in CIT centered on Infrastructure and Virtual Laboratories.
• The hardware required to support the online learning cost €250,000.00
• The Virtual Lab development was undertaken by 6 lecturers costing €65,000.00
• Total cost: €315,000.00
Evidence of success
The concrete outcomes from the relationship with Dell EMC are as follows:
• 177 graduates since 2012 from the Master of Science in Cloud Computing.
• MSc Research Scholarships in AI / Machine Learning.
• Partner on VEX IQ Robotics Competition
• Workplacement scheme with CIT’s Business Information Systems students
• RedZinc tested their BlueEye video live-stream using Dell EMC cloud infrastructure and CIT Sigma lab.
Potential for learning or transfer
The engagement between CIT and Dell EMC has provided an example of how students, staff and stakeholders can directly benefit from a HEI seeking to engage with enterprise in a connected and informed way. The relationship has developed over time from an extremely beneficial base relationship with the Computer Science Departmnent and radiated into the development of linkages and connections with other Departments and Research Centres across the institute.
Regarding getting this relationship right a number of elements are key:
• It is important that the benefits flow both ways and both the academic institution and the firm are improved by the connection.
• Top level support is required at a management level
• Key points of contact are imperative and CIT’s, Computer Science Department and top Management’s involvement provide consistency in this regard
