This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
Air pollution has become an increasingly important issue in Bucharest, due to the growth in the number of cars that use diesel or gasoline as their energy source. The high level of emissions leads to a deterioration of life quality, having negative long-term consequences on citizens health and on the environment. The increased number of electric vehicles determined the continuous decrease of their price in the last years and together with the financing measures implemented by the authorities in this field, the preference for choosing this type of vehicle has increased.
To combat the harmful effects of pollution and to improve air quality, Bucharest City Hall has implemented a program to stimulate the installation of fast charging stations for electric vehicles, by granting 500 vouchers worth 2100 Euro. Any individuals or companies that own commercial or office spaces, can set up fast charging stations for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles in parking lots that contain spaces intended exclusively for employees, visitors and customers.
The program is addressed to legal entities or private investors who own commercial spaces, hotels or other accommodation facilities, office buildings or fuel distribution stations and who want to install charging stations for electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles in their parking spaces. This initiative is supported by the Bucharest city budget and is meant to encourage sustainable, low CO2 mobility.

Resources needed
The funds for this program are offered by the Bucharest City Hall from the local budget in total of 1,050,000 Euro granted to 500 beneficiaries: individuals or enterprises, as vouchers.
Evidence of success
Through this type of measure, the authorities want to encourage sustainable transport in the region by developing charging infrastructure for electric and plug in hybrid vehicles. This will lead to an increase in the number of eco-friendly vehicles by removing the main fear of potential drivers - the low number of charging stations, thus achieving an improvement in air quality by reducing GHG emissions.
Potential for learning or transfer
This good practice has a significant potential to be replicated by other European regions, where there is a growing interest in transport using electric vehicles. In order to be able to successfully transfer this GP to other areas, and the effects to be significant as well as sustainable over time, certain existing conditions are necessary:
- Electric cars should already be present on the streets of those regions.
- Citizens must have a good awareness level regarding the need to use cars running on alternative energy sources.
- Local authorities who desire to finance the development of infrastructure for eco-friendly vehicles.
Combined with other measures to finance the acquisition of sustainable means of transport, as implemented in our region, all these can lead and support towards an improvement of environmentally friendly urban mobility.
