I4Efficiency project - Intelligent identifier for logistics integration and efficiency
About this good practice
I4Efficiency with highly innovative processes, intends to strengthen the annual reduction of CO2 emissions and reduction of energy consumed, less occupation of public space, increase of success rates in operations, greater flexibility and convenience for the populations in the way they are served, and rise of waste recycling rates. The project's goal was to develop and create a Unique Address Identifier (UDI), i.e. a code that unequivocally identifies a physical address and to which several categories and descriptors will be assigned. These will, in turn, enable the development of activities to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the logistic activity, namely in postal distribution, technical assistance and utilities maintenance (water, electricity and gas meters) as well as urban waste management.
The project is based on 3 core elements:
• development of the IUE that will promote the increase of effectiveness and efficiency of the logistics activity;
• digital solution that allows to orchestrate and manage all urban logistics processes in an optimized way;
• implementation of a combination of complementary initiatives at the living lab level that will exponentiate the impacts of the platform and IUE.
The main stakeholders were ZERO, the Municipality of Sintra and the local parishes where the project was implemented, CIAUD, Delta post, Marlo and VTMar. The beneficiaries of the project were the citizens.
Resources needed
The project is funded by EEA Grants with € 525 379,71 and the total amount is € 785 980,63.
Evidence of success
The practice allowed to develop a Unique Address Identifier (IUE) which resulted in reduction in kms traveled by vehicles involved in urban logistic operations and an increase in vehicle occupancy rate for last mile deliveries. It also allowed efficiency in waste management – from the unsorted waste it was possible to determine the bio-waste content. It also allowed to reduce CO2 emissions and cover close to 25.000 citizens.
Potential for learning or transfer
The I4efficiency has innovative approaches:
a.Focuses on exploring an unique combination of applied complementary solutions, resulting from a selection of best practices to global level that demonstrated real return to society
b.It is based on 2 aggregating elements that promote synergies:
-the digital platform for well organised operations and new concepts introduced
-the IUE as a tool for structuring innovative urban service logistics: delivery and collection of goods; waste processing; and services involving couriers (utility meter readings).Inefficiencies of this process put more pressure on urban areas, which translates into a significant impact on carbon emissions. Therefore potential for learning and transfer can have a real impact on resource efficiency.The specific transferable features are related to the platform and unique identifier.The transfer could be achieved by defining a pilot location where urban service logistics need most an intervention to be more efficient.
