Metropolis Platform usage in Rzeszów city, Poland

About this good practice
The Intelligent Parking Zone in Rzeszów, powered by Asseco's Metropolis system, addresses the challenge of efficient parking management in urban areas. As cities grow, quick access to parking is crucial, particularly for delivery and courier services, where operational efficiency depends on minimizing time spent searching for spaces. This system streamlines parking by providing real-time data on availability, reducing congestion and improving traffic flow in high-demand areas.
Using advanced technology, 338 cameras and 312 ground sensors monitor parking spaces, while 10 Variable Message Sign (VMS) boards display real-time availability. A mobile app guides drivers to the nearest parking spot, offering accurate, up-to-the-minute data through neural network image analysis. This replaces older models with a more precise solution, enhancing user experience.
Key stakeholders include city authorities, residents, and businesses, especially delivery and courier sectors. By cutting parking search time, the system boosts operational efficiency, reduces emissions from idling vehicles, and improves safety. This investment in smart infrastructure highlights how technology can address urban challenges, enhance delivery services, and support sustainable city development.
Expert opinion
Resources needed
The Metropolis platform by Asseco cost €3.43M, with 85% funded by the EU and the rest by Rzeszów's budget. Implementation took 25 months with 24 Asseco experts. Four people monitor the system. As it's under warranty, current maintenance costs are negligible and yet to be determined.
Evidence of success
An average of 730 users actively use the driver-dedicated app each month. The implementation of the smart parking zone significantly reduced traffic problems in the city center. It also made it easier for delivery drivers to find a free spot without circling around and wasting time.
There are 400 bus courses daily, but the maximum daily number of realized courses provided by the system reaches 800. The average number of passengers per day averages 70,000 passengers per day
Potential for learning or transfer
The Intelligent Parking Zone system in Rzeszów, powered by Asseco's Metropolis technology, is an innovative model for optimizing urban infrastructure. Using neural networks for real-time monitoring, it provides more accurate parking data than traditional methods, improving traffic flow, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing delivery efficiency. Successful adoption requires robust technological infrastructure, collaboration between public authorities and tech providers, and access to quality sensors and data tools. Regions with limited infrastructure or investment may face challenges, but the system's scalability and adaptability make it a promising solution for improving traffic management and sustainability in European cities.
