Electric buses for Bucharest Ilfov public transport
About this good practice
Considering the age of the car fleet of the public transport operator in the Bucharest Ilfov region and, taking into account the European transport policy which stipulates that by 2035, the majority of the public transport networks of major cities in Europe will be electrified, the Bucharest City Hall decided the purchase of 100 electric buses that will be allocated to a number of 14 routes in the capital. In other words, the project for the purchase of new buses, provided in the SUMP, has the specific objective of decongesting road traffic and reducing the negative impact on the environment by replacing private transport with public transport and, moreover, by reducing the carbon footprint caused by it. In addition to the purchase of buses, the project provides for the installation of fast charging stations through the pantograph type system mounted on all electric vehicles, but also slow charging stations, installed in depots. Charging times for fast stations are up to 15-20 minutes, and for those with slow charging, a duration of 4-6 hours. At this moment, the municipality launched the purchase, and the future supplier undertakes to deliver the vehicles within 14 months from the signing of the contract.
Resources needed
The total value of the project is 57 mil euro, including VAT, for the acquisition of electric buses and their charging infrastructure. 572.000 euro per bus and electric charging station.
Evidence of success
Since this project is in the implementation phase no results can be measured at this time. In addition, according to the Opportunity Study carried out for the development of this project, it is desired to reduce CO2 emissions from public transport by up to 5,000 tons annually, starting with the delivery date of all electric buses.
Potential for learning or transfer
Decreasing air quality is a major problem for the health of citizens in many large and medium-sized European cities. Along with other methods for improving air quality, the acquisition of these friendly vehicles within Bucharest public transport will be a major step through transport decarbonisation.
