Establishment of a local producer market at the Szőlőskert Restaurant
About this good practice
The family business started in 1992 with the establishment of the Vineyard Restaurant which is located just just outside Nagykanizsa, a town of nearly 50,000 inhabitants. The company maintained itself mainly from restaurant services and events. They have operated and continue to operate a traditional kitchen with a menu based on seasonal, local products.
Outside the hotel, a local producer market has been set up to deal with the crisis caused by the Covid 19 virus. The market was created based on the idea of the restaurant owner’s daughter. The products are currently sold by local producers and local artisans. As a result of the viral situation, many markets have closed and many producers have lost their source of revenue, so they were happy to take this opportunity. The market started with 15-16 local producers, today 20-22 producers sell here offering a diverse range of products. The Market is open once a week (on Fridays in summer and on Saturdays for the rest of the year) from 1 pm to 5 pm. Market days are built around themes, and performers are sometimes invited. The folk band of the Nagykanizsa Music School has also performed at a market event, and since then they have been invited to play at other events. The one hand, the market plays an important role in maintaining the restaurant business, supplying the restaurant with good quality ingredients. On the other hand, it benefits local producers and the population.
Resources needed
The Restaurant and Inn was built and renovated from its own resources and EU-tender grants. Only own resources were used to create the market.
