About this good practice
ESTACIONES, (RAIL STATIONS) is a project approved under the POCTEP (Crossborder cooperation). The aim is restore ancient railway structures from history and for history which would serve as homage to those who lost their lives building the tracks..
The area of intervention is location throw the border Ourense to Minho-limia, the facilities are located in mountain areas, in general, vulnerable areas. They have to face numerous difficulties as a result of their isolation, climatic conditions and altitude.
This vulnerability causes, in particular, some important disadvantages:Low agricultural productivity; Depopulation of characteristic areas and villages, isolation of the most vulnerable sector of the population, deterioration of minor architectural heritage, gradual abandonment of artisan professions and tourism focused almost exclusively on winter sports. The main goal is to protect the natural and cultural resource to showcase the railway infrastructures in order to make their surrounding areas sustainable, since these are composed of several places which have been or are in the process of being classified as sites of community importance (SCIS).
There are six train station recovered which main activities are involving with cultural and natural activities: in order to preserve the tradition: Costume Museum, the costume of Galicia Region, is an permanent exhibition, car museum, cultural legacy of native artist, and so on.

Evidence of success
The restore of an isolated historical building creates employment and making profits reinvested in the surrounding area. Moreover this allows maintaining cultural and natural heritage This project promote the local economy through the activities organize in the Stations: cross border events programs taken place in their facilities, sports events outdoors, training, dissemination event, seminars and other events promoting natural and cultural heritage.
Potential for learning or transfer
This project can be transferred to other similar areas with this special feature (rural and mountainous areas with natural and cultural heritage) like a way of sustainable promote of that, taken into account the impact of the economy in this areas.
This is a way to manage cultural heritage promoting activities relation to the surrounding area, rural area, and it´s a good option to local and regional authorities to improve economic and social aspects.
