ETSII – UPCT: 120 years of technology, innovation and service for citizens and enterprises
About this good practice
Problem addressed:
Local businesses were finding it difficult to implement a technology transformation fast enough. Therefore, there was a need for emerging technology enablers who speak the same language as the businesses.
How objectives were achieved:
UPCT addressed this problem by creating the first Master in Industry 4.0 in 2018, which received official degree recognition in 2020. In 2021, Industry 4.0 has been integrated into other university degrees: the Degree in Biomedical Engineering, the Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development and the Master in Industrial Management.
In 2022, this master's degree will offer a new dual training option built on a three-way scheme: the academy (ETSII - UPCT), the facilitators of Industry 4.0 (IDEA Engineering) and local companies (SMEs and others). What's new in this new study programme:
- Students carry out internships in a company for the entire duration of the programme.
- They are carried out in sequential order rather than in a classical parallel schedule.
- Project-based courses are assessed with real projects related to the requirements of digital transformation in the company where students undertake their internships.
- Distance learning methods adopted after the pandemic are used.
- Companies can involve students as technology mediators with technology enablers.
Stakeholders: Industry 4.0 enablers (IDEA Engineering), other academic actors (ETSII) and local companies
Resources needed
The Master's Degree has a cost of between EUR 150.000 and EUR 250.000 yearly for teaching staff and two office workers.
SMEs contribute with about EUR 21.060 per year in concept of grant scholarship covering the Master's fees (EUR 2160 / student) and of remuneration for interns (EUR 1050/month).
Evidence of success
4 companies involved ~ 12 students recruited
4 months for program registration deadline
Potential for learning or transfer
Other universities and study centres could launch similar programs in the future, replicating the three-fulcrum scheme.
