FAI Work-Life Balance Policies
About this good practice
Work-Life Balance policies have always been a key issue in FAI’s history with 500 employees, 90% women, work mostly on 24h, night/day shifts, managing social, educational and health services for the elderly, children, people with disabilities/mental health issues. Since 2015, FAI has been certifying its WLB Policies through Family Audit Standard. The following actions have been implemented by Family Friendly Desk for employees - counselling service for working time and flexibility measures (i.e. part time, shifts benefit), job rotation - Dissemination Family Friendly Desk Project (Casarsa Municipality) – Informadonna Desk supporting women to find training courses, jobs, promoting gender equality to prevent violence against women - Welfare - Holiday Camp for FAI’s members children through educational and cultural activities; psychological Desk for parental support has been implemented - Communication - information&communication network (newsletters, house organ Macramè, website, social network) - Contract improvements - longer permission in case of bereavement, serious illness and parental leave.
Since 2022, due to Conciliamo Call from National Family Department with FAI Work life Balance Management project, these policies have been implemented. Specifically cooperative members who are over 50 with serious health issues may benefit of extra leave from work. Furthermore, with Ironing and Tailoring start-up, FAI promotes Job redesign, creating services for all employees.
Resources needed
FAI Cooperative manages the project with their own financial resources. At the moment, for the delivery of the activities two people are employed.
Evidence of success
The monitored impact gives positive results such as: sleep better, take less sick leave, and better manage their personal work-life balance.
With the use of Job Redesign’s actions, the project has created two starts up. The Redesigning Ironing Service with the aim of offering free ironing services to members after previous booking on the specific app. The Redesign J-Ob_Jects lab which recycles pieces of cloth to give them new life; with the use of an E-Commerce platform.
Potential for learning or transfer
The transfer can be hampered by possible job differences among organizations, but the WLB policies can be used as an example to be tailored on the specific needs of employees, employer, and Public Authorities.
The welfare is a tool that in today’s society represents not only sustainability and competitivity, but also responsibility for the companies to give new answers and generate values on the local areas. Thanks to WLB project and with the will of improving and implementing new opportunities, FAI had the chance to add new opportunities especially for female members.
