Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr e.V.
About this good practice
Problem Addressed:
Duisburg’s economic base is industry focused and due to increasing CO2-price in the European Union it faces rising pressure to change its industrial base from being fossil-based towards climate-neutrality. The regional experience from the structural change beginning in the 1960s demonstrated that transformation processes need to be actively managed to bear new opportunities.
How objectives are reached:
The association is engaged regularly vis-à-vis with decision-makers on the state, federal and European level in order to set up the framework for large-scale employment of hydrogen in industrial applications. Stakeholder and networking events with high caliber political representatives are organised. Position papers on hydrogen policy issues published.
The Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr e.V. was founded 2021 as a cluster management organisation, with the task to coordinate hydrogen activities in Duisburg. For that matter DBI is providing administrational services, to organise internal events on behalf of the association. It provides a support and discussion platform for its 47 members (2023), with the goal of ramping up the hydrogen economy in Duisburg.

Potential for learning or transfer
One reason that the Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr has potential for transfer is, that the association facilitates issue- and subject-based cooperation between its 47 member companies and provides them with different discussion and networking formats to further the cooperation between its members with the goal of decarbonisation.
Local economic potentials need to harnised and local companies need to engaged in order to incorporate them into a cluster organisation, which is pursuing tangible goals and targets. Therefore, it needs to be clear through which means the goals and targets of the cluster organisation will be reached.
