Leisure library
About this good practice
This leisure library is sustainable in all dimensions: Less material resources is needed when people do not buy new equipment, it saves money for the users when they do not have to buy their own equipment and gives equal opportunities to citizens at the same time as it promotes a healthy, active lifestyle.
Target group is citizens, visitors of citizens (for example children who spend holidays with their grandparents who live in the municipality), tourists.
What you need is to leave your name and a mobile number.
Resources needed
All equipment is second hand and donated which means that this is of no cost for the municipality. However, the municipality provides financial support for renting the building and for staff working in the Leisure library..
Evidence of success
The Leisure library is frequently used both by citizens, their visitors and also tourists. The busiest season is the winter season since Överkalix is close to the Arctic circle.
The figures show so far that 360 people borrowed 1 363 items in 2023 and the numbers for 2024 is about the same when counting the months up until August.
If all or even some the over 1000 items borrowed each year should be bought new instead there would be environmental inpact of manufacturing these items.
Potential for learning or transfer
This can be achieved as long as there is a place to store the equipment and someone who keeps track of who has borrowed what.
Fritidsbanken in Överkalix kan provide study visits or explain to interested parties how they work and the experiences they have obtained through the years it has been running.
