Lowtech, locally produced food and biodiversity by goats, sheep and cattle.
About this good practice
The project revolves around the municipality’s purchase of cattle and
goats, which are used to graze important natural areas. This is done in
a low-tech manner, avoiding the use of machinery, while simultaneously
promoting biodiversity in these areas.
The animals are lent to interested local farmers for five years. The
farmers are taking care of the animals and all the paperwork and as a
benefit they freely get the exceed produced animals, as locally produced
food.
In the end the farmers deliver back ten animals to the municipality, which
then can be placed to a new farmer elsewhere in the local community.
The municipality furthermore have an animal trailer and mobile fencing,
which freely can be used by the community of nature preserving farmers,
when they have to install or move herds of animals elsewhere.
In some cases, the local community are looking after and taking care of
the animals and insure correct fencing and wellbeing of the animals. As
a bonus they are offered a part of the locally produced food.
This approach represents a nature-based solution, utilizing
natural processes to address human-made challenges and make locally
produced food.
It’s a good practice because areas are grazed by animals instead of
machines. This natural method helps maintain natural areas, provides
food for the animals, and contributes to local food production and locally
engagement in nature preserfation. Additionally, it positively impacts
biodiversity by grazing the areas in this way.
Resources needed
The local price of 65 cattles of Galloway-breed for startup.
The local price of a Animal Carrige for transportation.
The local price of mobile fencing for lassoing animals when needed.
Evidence of success
The local farmers achieve their own additional cattle herd for
free, cause of the free and initially supplied cattle herd by the
municipality.
Local farmers are engaged in local nature preservation on a
professional level.
The local community is engaged in nature preservation and in
addition is supplied with locally produced food.
The municipality receive a nature based solution in
preservation of desired nature areas, instead of using
machinery and manpower by their own.
Potential for learning or transfer
This is a good practice is interesting for other municipalities,
which has the obligation to do nature preservation on a more
nature based solution level. (as stated by other PP’s in the
FEEL-project)
This is a good practice in getting professional and locally
based farmers engaged professional in nature preservation as
a community and nature based solution.
This is a good practice in getting further community
engagement in locally produced food and nature based
