Malta Environment Platform & Services k/a MEPS
About this good practice
The MEPS (Malta Environment Platform & Services) is an interactive geoportal which provides users with high quality environmental information, assisting the viewers to visualise and understand the latest environmental spatial data. Information available on the MEPS covers a variety of environmental themes, namely air, enforcement, permitting, noise, protected areas, radiation, waste as well as water and marine information.
The geoportal aims at facilitating and empowering citizens, businesses, academia, policy makers and NGOs to take conscious decisions and instigate changes when equipped with credible, regular and timely information about the state of the environment.
It also includes functions to facilitate the user’s experience including search functions, measurement tools, drawing tools, the function to switch between viewing the map in the traditional base map or orthophoto imagery as well as a tool to select the preferred scale of the map.
In the near future, ERA shall be uploading on the MEPS more information related to waste, mainly data related to permitted waste management facilities as well as waste collection points around Malta.
Resources needed
Significant resources are required to run and maintain the MEPS Geoportal. Such resources are related to the digital infrastructure (servers, interface, databases etc.) required to operate such geoportal as well as human resources (IT experts, GIS specialist etc.) to maintain MEPS.
Evidence of success
MEPS has been launched very recently. ERA is currently monitoring its progress and receiving feedback from the general public and stakeholders with a view to enhance its performance. In this context, in the near future, new information on waste shall be made available on MEPS
Potential for learning or transfer
In line with the principles of the INSPIRE Directive and the Open Data Directive ,the MEPS geoportal aims at facilitating and empowering citizens, businesses, academia, policy makers and NGOs to take conscious decisions and instigate changes when equipped with easily accessible, credible, regular and timely information about the state of the environment, including waste.
