About this good practice
South-West Oltenia Region seriously needed an R&D platform/hub to support the development of new and innovative products in the transport related sectors, to support SMEs. As a result, in 2016 the Faculty of Mechanics and Transport Engineering of the University of Craiova inaugurated the Mechanics Campus which was modernised, by renovating the existing infrastructure, laboratories, spaces for academic courses, equipment. Therefore, the campus now includes state-of-the-art labs, materials, industrial & academic teams that work on developing innovative manufacturing technologies for transport means with direct impact on SMEs. The Mechanics RD Platform/Campus is a technological RD platform built to answer the challenge of mastering the mechanical engineering and research-development in the field of transportation and related sectors. It responds to the challenges of industrial competitiveness and technological research in advanced manufacturing.

It was funded by ROP 2007-2013, co-financed by ERDF.
The amount of 10M Euro is the grant for the investment that the University (Mechanics Faculty) has received. Over 1,000 students and 180 university teaching staff were involved.

Evidence of success
More than 500 graduates of the Mechanics Faculty find jobs every year in South-West Oltenia Region, most of them in SMEs with business operations in transport-related sectors. Over the period 2017-2019, more than 600 graduated engineers and researchers benefitted from the R&D infrastructure training and practical stages, then found jobs in Transport SMEs in the Region. Taking high level skills to SMEs resulted in improved production capacity and technological standard in the companies.
Potential for learning or transfer
This is an important Good Practice example of the South-West Oltenia Region in terms of technical staff (engineers and researchers) with highly trained background to support and take jobs in innovative and dynamic SMEs and of entrepreneurs who develop innovative business ideas to attract investment to support the growth of their companies.
