This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
Památky žijí (Monuments live) is a transborder Interreg AT-CZ project which aims at the revitalization of cultural sites through the organization of various cultural and social events. They include concerts, traditional fairs, cultural performances, workshops and many more. While some events are just coordinated from within the project (they would take place anyway), many more are directly supported by the project itself. It means direct support to organizers, especially when securing larger public events is outside their normal operating range. It includes sound systems, stage assembly or promotional campaigns. Over 20 events were co-organized within the project lifetime and it included over 15 historical sites. The events range from mass events attended by thousands of people (city-square concerts, traditional fairs, events for children, historical re-enactments) to intimate gatherings of just a few dozens of visitors (classical music concerts, workshops, craft display). The organization of such events brings visitors to sites they wouldn't probably visit otherwise and, at the same time, provides the site management with valuable experience with promotion or event organization.
Resources needed
First stage funding was 1 125 000 € from EU funds (Interreg AT-CZ). The popularity of the events led to a new application worth 1 000 000 € (not yet approved).
Evidence of success
The events, especially those directly supported by the project, were closely monitored regarding their visitor rate and local population feedback. Generally, the local populations found the events interesting and the level of irritation (caused by crowded streets, car parking issues, noise…) was low, mostly because the duration of the event was short. During the project lifetime seasons (2018, 2019) the events were attended by over 65 000 visitors.
Potential for learning or transfer
The approach of the project combines two ways of supporting local cultural heritage – external support from the EU project and support of local communities to prepare and organize cultural and social events. This approach spurs local population involvement, without which the events wouldn't take place, and subsequently supports the idea with technical assistance. Such an approach proved fruitful, the type and final shape of the event is designed by the locals, who know far better what the sites and their visitors expect. This approach can be transferred to any region, regardless of its history, the number of historical sites or anything like that. The most critical point is the collaboration with project bearers (providing funds) and local communities (providing content, promotion, organization).
