Moveable Monuments Collections of the National Archive of Monuments
About this good practice
The Moveable Monuments Collections of the National Archive of Monuments is an important step for the promotion of cultural heritage in Greece & internationally. A large number of cultural heritage objects from the Directorate of the National Archive of Monuments of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, some 67,825 items, are now available.
The Collections include objects from the collections of the Regional Services (Ephorates of Antiquities) and the Ministry of Culture and Sports Museums. The movable monuments that have been included have been selected by the scientific personnel of the Ministry of Culture according not only to the archaeological, historical and cultural value of the monuments and consequently their potential interest for the world scientific community and the wider public, but also according to their particular perservation needs.
The objects included in the digital collections relate to excavation findings and archaeological research, in which the Archaeological Service has been engaged since the 19th century. Another group of objects are portable icons, various material culture objects and antiques. A third, smaller group of objects reflect modern Greek culture and they come from different collections, such as the Museum of Modern Greek Culture. In their entirety, the monuments that have been registered in the National Archive of Monuments reflect the wealth, the variety, the conceptual and chronological range of cultural heritage throughout Greece.
Resources needed
This initiative was funded under the OP “Digital Convergence” and the specific Call 31 “Culture” (2011) and Call 31.2 “Digital Services for the Promotion of the Greek Cultural Digital Inventory" (2012), with total budget 75 M €. The results contributed to the creation of this national repository
Evidence of success
A vast amount of the platform’s visitors are researchers, teachers etc who use it for educations and research purposes. This very important as the platform has attracted the interest of the research community. According to questionnaires addressed to the users, most of them seek for information of cultural places they are going to visit, or during their research they discovered documents, sites, and other cultural assets whose history motivated them to organize a physical visit
Potential for learning or transfer
The objectives of this initiative are the free access and common distribution of digital cultural resources - within the framework of the policies followed by the responsible for them entities - their highlighting and interconnection, their safe preservation and their inclusion in the European Digital Library Europeana in agreement with national and European priorities. It is very important to adopt this good practice as the organizations that provide their metadata in SearchCulture.gr ensure international, long-term visibility and promotion of their cultural wealth and are therefore positioned in a prominent way in the national and international environment of digital culture. Taking advantage of national infrastructures, as the National Documentation Centre, in its role, ensures, they increase the findability of their content, enhance the value of their documentation and ensure the best conditions for its reuse
