About this good practice
In Spain, more than a third of currently active business owners will reach retirement age in the next ten years and very often there is no-one in the family environment to whom they can transfer their business. In view of the size of the Spanish economy, there is a risk of losing 50 000 Spanish firms per year due to the inefficient transfer. The main obstacle that Spain faces to stop this problem is the lack of a well-defined ecosystem for business transfer. There have been a need of realistic information for decision takers, a proactive involvement of stakeholders and training on the subject of business transfer.
The Network of Family Business Chairs approaches this problem through the development and promotion of research, training, dissemination and the provision of services related to family business (among them a special focus on the subject of succession and transfer of business). This network is sponsored by the Family Business Institute created by the most influencial Spanish family businessses.
The objective of the research project is to influence policy makers and other decision takers in the public and private sector to strenght and prcotect the family business in Spain. While the training focus on family business members, especially future business successors, executives working in family firms and potential entrepreneurs, with the final objective to preserve and strenght family businesses.

Potential for learning or transfer
The subject of business family succession is fundamental for Europe since there are over 17 million of business families (@ 60% of total businesses in Europe), creating around 100 million of jobs. A well planned business succession keeps a successful grow of the companies avoiding job losses. In order of keep the European family firms healthy, it is important to know the characteristics and the impact that family businesses have in the European economy. The studies managed by the Spanish Network of Family Businesses in collaboration with the universities, allow to have a clear picture of the weaknesses and strenghts of family businesses allowing business owners and policy makers to act to create a better enviroment for the grow and strength of family businesses.
