About this good practice
Each year, the PODIM conference gives an unforgettable two-day long experience with numerous lectures, roundtables, panel discussions and workshops, discovering the latest knowledge and hidden formulae for motivation, launch and successful global breakthrough of start-up companies.
PODIM Challenge is a special content part of the conference, meant to help start-up companies come into contact with esteemed international investors. Six start-ups are chosen every year for pitching to the full attention of the investor committee and the audience.
Each year, the PODIM conference is where a ceremoniously announcement of the winner of the national competition Start:up of the year is made. The atmosphere is fantastic, full of excited expectations, and both the conference participants as well as competition finalists are guaranteed to have a remarkable experience in the limelight, surrounded by the media and television cameras. And admiration from all those who are boldly embarking on the path of making their business dreams come true.
The PODIM conference, the 38th in 2018, can look at all its results and feedback from satisfied participants to confirm its direction of development – with the goal to become an important hub of start-up ecosystems of Central and Eastern Europe.
PODIM is supported by big companies, SMEs, startups, financial sector and public sector. The Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, and the Slovene Enterprise Fund are co-organisers.

The total budget of the conference is cca. 450.000 € in the last years, there are over 10 people involved in the organisation of the event.

Evidence of success
PODIM is the biggest and most influential startup event in the Alps-Adriatic region and is organised annually in Maribor. In 2018, it was attended by more than 1,000 individuals from 25 countries, including more than 70 prominent speakers, 90 Slovenian and international investors, more than 100 corporate representatives, and more than 300 representatives of innovative startups. The companies come from 33 countries, learning about foreign markets, look for a broader perspective and ideas.
Potential for learning or transfer
The conference could be replicated in other regions bringing together local startups, investors, university and local government. PODIM is also important as an event that ensures a critical mass of people, incentives, and interests that drive positive changes for the entire startup ecosystem and its legislative framework.
PODIM is one of the best practices how to achieve good cooperation among private and public sectors and the event is a reference in policies regarding economic development and startup support.
