Preventive conservation and protection against emergencies of the cultural heritage of the municipality of Ponferrada
About this good practice
The project is developed by the Universidad Nacional a Distancia (UNED) in Ponferrada. Its objective is to generate a system of good practices, as well as the consolidation of a management system for the cultural heritage of the municipality of Ponferrada based on preventive conservation and protection against emergencies such as COVID-19. In turn, it aims to be connected to the Smart Rural Territory platform of the Junta de Castilla y León, and to generate a technological development pole focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) applied to Cultural Heritage with an Observatory and Research Centre in Ponferrada.
The principles of the project include:
- The analysis of threats, vulnerability and risks of the assets of cultural interest of the municipality.
- Establish a preventive conservation system with monitoring, early alarms and emergencies and generate a Building Maintenance document.
- Draw up a specific preventive conservation and emergency protection plan based on loT for two historic sites in the municipality of Ponferrada (Peñalba de Santiago and Los Barrios).
With all this, the aim is to enhance the attractiveness of the municipality, guaranteeing the sustainability of the territory and fighting against depopulation, with a double vision: historical and architectural, for which the use of new technologies is essential, with sensors that allow greater control of the physical security of the building.

Potential for learning or transfer
The project that sets Ponferrada as an example is comprehensive and innovative, as it combines technology, heritage and culture and aims to be applicable at different scales.
The experience in other territories shows what the promising project can achieve in the Ponferrada area, where the aim is to incorporate preventive conservation into professional training plans, raise awareness among the local population and involve citizens.
Based on linked data, open, interoperable and scalable. It brings heritage resources closer to researchers, to the bodies responsible for the development of land management policies and to its inhabitants.
