Primary school electrical and electronic waste collection competition
About this good practice
The main objective of the competition is to familiarise children with and promote the selective collection of electronic waste in a playful way through a competition between primary schools for an incentive grant for the amount of e-waste collected and other valuable prizes.
Thanks to the schools participating in the competition, which has made environmental awareness a priority, nearly ten tonnes of electronic waste have been recycled in a professional and environmentally friendly way and significant cash reward was given to eligible schools as incentive grants.
In 2022, AKSD organised awareness-raising E+E waste collection days, which aimed to get students to be active participants and drivers of the competition, so that the local community, including the school, could join together and collect as much used E+E waste for disposal as possible. The e-waste collection campaign collected all waste electronic equipment (e.g. household appliances, washing machines, refrigerators, televisions, monitors, consumer electronics, electronic toys, DIY machines, electronic tools, etc.) that once used electricity.
The participating primary schools, in cooperation with AKSD, organised and carried out the collection, and at the end of the collection the company transported the waste, treated it professionally and sent it to recycling plants.
As a sponsor of the E+E Waste Collection Action Days, NI Hungary Kft. offered prizes of high value to all participating institutions.
Resources needed
Waste management company – capacity for collection and organisation of the competition including involvement of schools
Prizing: sponsorship involving engaged companies
Evidence of success
The competition has been successful, with several educational institutions enthusiastically taking part in the collection.
In 2022, more than 13 tonnes of WEEE have been collected.
More thousands of students were reached and involved.
Potential for learning or transfer
The practice is easily applicable for waste management companies having enough capacity for collection. As for the prizing, one or more engaged companies located in the same city/municipality can act as a sponsor organisation, strengthening their environmental responsibility and recognition in the region.
