About this good practice
SeAMK Projektipaja® (Project Workshop, Project Factory) is an active learning concept at the School of Technology of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (SeAMK). In the Project Workshop the project based learning connects the theory to the practice. The student teams develop their know-how and their project skills by solving the real assignments of the company under the control of company representatives and teachers of SeAMK. These assignments can be pre-planning tasks of production or software, product development, testing, etc. Student team can be multidisciplinary in which there are students from different degree programmes of the School of Technology (ICT, mechanical engineering, automation). One project lasts approximately 1-2months.
The objective of the Project Workshop is that the students get new know-how which is deeper and wider than usual and which is related to an engineer's assignments. They adopt and train technical and production know-how and their project skills.
Project Workshop studies have been built in the curriculum of the degree programme and students get credit points from their work. Companies get a very innovative proposed solution indeed to the subject of development and and at the same time they are able to become acquainted with their possible future workers. Participation is free of charge to companies, they only need to cover the possible material costs.

Resources needed
To practice this kind of Good Practice there must be a learning institution to collaborate with (the students, facilities, laboratories and equipments).
There are 8 teachers involved per year but since this activity is part of the normal studies there is no seperate funding needed for that.

Evidence of success
175 projects has been accomplished during the years 2014-2018. Often the company offers possibility to practical training period and thesis work for the student. There is no data of how many students are employed through this activity but companies are using it as a means of recruitment.
Projects implemented by students are often part of the product development, the other parts and the end result are companies' own confidential information so there is no direct data available.

Potential for learning or transfer
This Good Practice is possible to implement on any area that has a learning institution and students to accomplish the projects with.
There is a great potential in cooperation of the companies and the students. Students will learn by doing and the companies will find young and skilled workforce for the future recruitment needs.
