Remote smart heart monitoring system
About this good practice
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a positive view of digital healthcare - remote counseling, condition monitoring and home care technologies allow to monitor, diagnose and discuss the results remotely. Lithuanian high-tech start-up has developed a long-term heart rate monitoring system which can be used at home or at any medical institution. The technology is based on artificial intelligence solutions used for a software and includes a device, fastened to a human chest. ¬¬¬¬¬ This technology is easy to use as a devise is light and can be used at home, when the person is resting, doing some sports or performing any other daily activities. When connected to a smartphone or tablet, the application displays detailed heart rate data in real time. Additionally, the development of software based on artificial intelligence has started, extending the functionality of the device. The improved heart monitoring system allows not only real-time monitoring of heart activity, but will also analyze data and provide conclusions. Historical data is very important because long-term, regular analysis of heart activity help to identify health problems much more accurately and prevent deterioration in heart function in advance. Having in mind statistical data about heart and cardiovascular diseases, such a device would be useful for at least 20 percent of population who are at increased risk for heart problems
Resources needed
Initial development of the system was financed by 2 national financial measures “Intelektas” and ‘Eksperimentas” which provided 785 636 Eur in total. Financial support from external investors were received up to 250 000 Eur. Besides, a team of experts are needed in order to develop such product.
Evidence of success
The company donated 10 units to Lithuanian hospitals, which were used to monitor remotely the heart activity of Covid-19 patients at hospitals. Besides, this system is available to buy in online shop directly from the producer.
Potential for learning or transfer
For the successful transfer of such good practice, it is esential to ensure that national financing schemes which support RDI developement for SMEs are launched and SME has financial backgroud to implement reseach and create such products.
