About this good practice
Manufacturing industry represents a generator of Research and Development, innovation, growth and employment. Based upon increasing pressure on manufacturers (increased production capacity in low-cost economies and increased level of sophistication of supply chains in high-cost economies), the manufacturers need to embrace novel technologies, principles and approaches. In other words, manufacturers need to digitize their production, while taking into consideration also improvement in processes and human resource management. The main objective of the Smart Factory HUB project is to improve framework conditions for innovation in the area of “smart factory”. Therefore, the project’s goal is to develop R&D and business policy conditions for transnational cooperation in the manufacturing industry. This will result in improved cooperation between R&D and business where based on a RIS3 (Research and Innovation Smart Specialization Strategy) centered model, quadruple helix partners will be oriented to find novel solutions in the following three domains: applying novel technologies, applying effective production process and applying effective human resource management system.
Resources needed
Total budget of the project: 1.838.636 EUR
Evidence of success
• Conducted research for all partner countries - how active we are in Industry 4.0 and smart specialization (Benchmark report).
• Handbook Created - Over 50 International Success Examples in Industry 4.0 (Handbook)
• Interactive map created - Smart factory hub platform. (http://www.p-tech.si/sfh-mapping/)
• Developed a platform with expert lectures, project partner event calendar, webinars, smart production solutions (https://elp.iao.fraunhofer.de/moodle/)
• Smart solution catalogue created

Potential for learning or transfer
Motivate both private and public sector to raise the levels of investment in R&D Supports innovation and technology-based businesses.
Conclusion:
Almost 80% of SMEs are ready to cooperate in the future, primarily acting as "recipients" of new technologies and systems. They are most interested in the production level (smart solutions) or the enterprise level - education/ training. SMEs face challenges in implementing smart manufacturing solutions and systems. The most common challenges are related to the need for investment and lack of information/ knowledge.
Recommendations:
Encourage businesses to increase demand for innovation and research. Support digital innovation hubs (DIHs) that aim to support product-oriented SMEs with the services they need, such as scouting technology, developing digital transformation skills, financing/financing support, etc.
Increase dialogue with all relevant stakeholders during the development of funding/ subsidies granting procedures.
