About this good practice
The Solarbundesliga is a ranking of the most successful solar energy communities in Germany. The benchmark is the per capita output for solar heat and solar power installed in municipality. The organization is the same like most soccer leagues in Europe. The categories are the metropoles (Seria A), the middle towns, and small villages. Added with soccer national league and county leagues, the competition aims to win the championship by the improvement and increase of PV-installations.
The ranking is published at the end of the season.
Effect:
Raising awareness for Solar installation
Motivates to find new potentials in the municipalities and to motivate citizen to participate and install PV on their roofs.
Village and cities compete among themselves

Resources needed
None! The attractiveness of the solarbundesliga is the easy way to participate. The league is organized by the editors of a renewable energy journal and was in the beginning support-ed by a national environmental organization.
Evidence of success
Competition spirit and motivation increase PV Installation, especially if the municipal authorities offer further incentives (e.g. small grants for new installation). By signing up to the SOLARBUNDESLIGA municipalities immediately begin a process that will increase interest and implementation of low carbon measures. The increase in interest is the most obvious measure of success and it gives a higher profile to the public for carbon reduction measures.
Potential for learning or transfer
Great transfer potential to every country with a special awareness of the soccer league (“La Seria Solare A”)
Competition spirit and motivation increase PV Installation, especially if the municipal authorities offer further incen-tives (e.g. small grants for new installation)
Great marketing options and communication methods to inform about the potential of solarenergy for everyone and for the solar league.
