SPARK Finland – Turning good ideas to great solutions to benefit patients and society
About this good practice
SPARK Finland addresses the need to bridge the gap between academic and clinical discoveries in the health tech and life science sectors and their translation into practical and value-creating solutions for patients and society. This context arises from the recognition that many promising research findings fail to progress beyond the laboratory due to a lack of resources, expertise, and industry connections needed for successful commercialisation. SPARK Finland was introduced to provide a structured pathway and support system for researchers, clinicians, and students to navigate the complex process of innovation and entrepreneurship in these fields.
The practice of SPARK Finland aims to achieve several objectives, including empowering participants with the skills and knowledge needed to develop innovative solutions, facilitating integration and exposure to key players in main markets, supporting career development, and building a "systemic memory" of success. These objectives are reached through a combination of education, mentoring, networking, and practical training provided by the program. SPARK Finland follows the proven model established by the Stanford SPARK program, providing top-notch mentoring, education, and a cost-effective approach to generating proof of concept for biomedical research discoveries. The program works closely with innovation and technology transfer offices of associated institutions to identify and support promising projects.
Resources needed
As of April 2020, the program is fully funded by member institutions and supporting cities, coordinated nationally by Tampere University and regionally by several universities.
