Stilbruch
About this good practice
With two locations in Hamburg, Stilbruch offers second-hand furniture in top quality. In addition to the multitude of unique pieces of furniture, Stilbruch also offers books, clothing and other household items. Up to 5-6 truckloads of clothing, furniture, books, records or technology are delivered daily to Stilbruch, which is a subsidiary of the Hamburg City Cleaning Authority. Much of this material has been rescued by the cleaning employees from going to bulky waste. Many private individuals also bring their sorted items directly to the stores.
Resources needed
The project requires resources for the shops and staff to offer recycled products. Apart from that, the project relies on cooperation between the shops and local/regional waste organisations.
Evidence of success
The projects has been ongoing for more than 20 years. in 2019, more than 400,000 articles were sold.
Potential for learning or transfer
The concept can easily be applied to other regions, especially cities where second-hand use of products is well established and accepted in society.
Success is facilitated if local waste management is managed by public authorities.
