This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
The project is aimed at creating conditions for connecting the old tourist route from Sabinov to Muszyna in Poland.
It is a former fortification road, which will include a map recording the castles on this road. It is intended to attract people to visit monuments in both cities to a greater extent. Sabinov is a small town located in the Prešov Region, north-eastern Slovakia. The fortification system of the city of Sabinov is considered to be Gothic-Renaissance, due to the characteristic layout of the bastions with their relatively large spacing (50 - 77 m). The total length of the walls was 1.4 km. The complex consisted of 7 m high and 2 m thick walls with shooting ranges and galleries. They included bastions, the total number of which in the 16th century stabilized at 16. The city was accessible by two protected gates in the north and south. Currently, the city of Sabinov is implementing the project "Muszyna - Sabinov: Strengthening the common cultural heritage of the Polish-Slovak border" within the Interreg program Polish-Slovak cross-border cooperation. The priority axis is the protection and development of the natural and cultural heritage of the cross-border area. The specific goal of the project is to intensify the sustainable use of cultural and natural
heritage by visitors and residents. The total value of the project is € 2,754,064.79, of which the city of Sabinov has eligible costs of € 850,686.72

Resources needed
Due to the fact that modernization and reconstruction requires a high amount of funds, the municipality was not able to carry out these works from its own resources in previous periods.
Therefore, financing the renewal of part of the city fortifications from the ERDF is a suitable source of funding

Evidence of success
The project is aimed at creating conditions for connecting the old tourist route from Sabinov to Muszyna in Poland. It is also a motivation for citizens and tourists to learn about local history. In addition to the reconstruction work, the project will also support other activities (event "Life Under the Walls", maps, book) and includes various exhibitions and conferences.
Potential for learning or transfer
The interplay between conservation of the city fortification and improvement of services in tourism on both sides of the Slovak-Polish boarder strengthens the public perception of this cultural heritage and complements the cultural offer and tourism services in the region. The example can be applied to many cities in Europe.
