Tarmac Incubator
About this good practice
10 years ago, Tarmac was the first so called now incubator in France to be created in Grenoble to answer a real need for new companies to settle in quick other than renting or buying their offices which is an important cost for early stage start-ups.
Start-ups will find all the resources such as a work location at the foot of the Alpine peaks, support services disposal for example negotiated business partnership; consultant, meeting rooms; reprography; central purchasing office. Finally, they benefit from a dynamic around an entrepreneurial community built through networking event & entrepreneur experience exchange.
Start-ups can attend the Tarmac through 3 different ways: a complete 3 year incubation; a support outside the Tarmac; a soft-landing program.
The beneficiaries are start-ups early created seeking for recruitment, administrative, commercial back up & expertise as well as investment & funding. Before entering the incubator, they must apply and convince a selection jury composed of bankers, accountants but also innovation supporting structures, funding structures and public authorities who are able to validate the relevance and the potential of the start-ups to develop and growth on the Grenoble territory.
27 Start-ups are incubated today. The Tarmac is supported by institutional, private and research partners that comfort its place as a key structure for start-ups creation and development.

The total yearly budget for the Tarmac is 182k€
2,5 full time persons are running it
The financial support of Grenoble Alpes Metropole is 55k€ per year.
Evidence of success
Tarmac incubator has opened 2 buildings of 4000m2, incubated 125 projects among which 93 start-ups are still running which represents 910 created jobs on the Grenoble territory. Tarmac has supported ÂĽ of the start-ups created in Grenoble for the last 20 years. Today the start-up community created is recognized among them and the ecosystem. Its importance relies on its strong partnership that supports it: 4 institutional partners, 3 banks and insurance, 9 education & research partners.
Potential for learning or transfer
Tarmac governance is a good example of collaboration between local authorities and start-up development and acceleration. As the Metropole is participating in the start-up entry committee it allows it to keep a precious track on innovations and economic trends. It also gives the chance to select start-ups and innovations that could serve public policies goals such as environmental, social or public health challenges. Tarmac feedback on the economic trend and business development is very precious for a territory to make the right decisions on economic development policies, this kind of experience and feedback can be valuable for other regions and is a key factor in the success of this good practiceThe incubator created a real showcase of local start-ups ecosystem. It attracts regional and international start-ups which is beneficial for the local economy. The strong link between the research technological transfer agencies and the incubator makes the start-up acceleration more valuable.
