About this good practice
The Government of Extremadura has an ambitious but achievable target: to ensure that 10% of the vehicles in the region (approximately 9.200) will be electric by 2030 and that, more than 400 charging points will be installed throughout the territory. According to data from December 2017, the region only has 250 electric vehicles, this means 0,29% of the existing stock.
To help achieve this objective, in February 2019 an incentive program (Moves) was published to promote efficient and sustainable mobility, including a grant scheme launched for a total amount of 1.043.465,22 €.
This call establishes three types of eligible actions: first, the purchase of alternative energy vehicles; second, the implementation of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles; and third, the establishment of an electric bicycle loan system.

Resources needed
The MOVES program has committed 1.043.456 € co-financed with ERDF funds
Evidence of success
The Regional Government received 386 requests for the first call, mainly for the installation of charging points and for the acquisition of electric vehicles and others with alternative propulsion.
This initiative aims to reduce 23,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Potential for learning or transfer
To move beyond traditional vehicles is not an easy task. That is why it is important to offer public support, not only to replace the existing fleet but also to give security to citizens with a stable and efficient charging infrastructure; this is a key aspect to ensure that electric vehicles will be purchased. This challenge is common to other regions that could learn from the experience of Extremadura to overcome the problem.
