Waste minimization in Greencities & S-Moving Urban intelligence and smart mobility meeting in Málaga
About this good practice
Fycma wants to reduce its waste at events and decrease its carbon footprint. To do this, calculations are made based on operational practices and modifications are implemented to obtain better results
Exhibition area:
•Stands manufactured by FYCMA, all with reusable wood.
• Furniture: Each exhibitor requested furniture according to their needs and this was provided through their own or rented furniture.
• Flooring: High-performance artificial grass was used in the assembly instead of carpet, taking advantage of its 10-year durability. It is a recyclable, resistant, reusable and long-lasting material.
• Waste bins and containers have been installed in the common areas, exhibition and organization areas. The number of ecological islands has been increased.
Communication:
• SDG: All commercial proposals include their logo, so that all contractors know that this is an event committed to the objectives. The website includes a list of good practices to take into account when participating in an event.
• Paper consumption: Communication to exhibitors and participating professionals electronically. Documentation, design and accreditations through a consultation APP. Elimination of printed accreditations from mobile devices in PDF format or through QR codes. The little paper is recycled.
• In the design of the materials according to eco-design recommendations.
• The cafeteria material is reusable. Local and seasonal products are used.
Resources needed
Carbon footprint calculation: €2000. Compensation of tons of CO2 €4500. Investment in reusable and recyclable materials: 30% materials used. Fair carpet 50% extra cost Recyclable: €4500. Reusable:9Uses: €3300.Enough storage space for furniture and objects. Time cleaning and collecting materials €750
Evidence of success
• Reduction of waste collected after the event: (70e x ton reduction)
• Reduction of the material rented for the event: Most of it is kept in the warehouse, around 100e per unit
• Reduce carbon footprint. The direct amount of carpets, tarps as waste decreases significantly.
• Reduce plastic waste: Plastic cups, cutlery, bottles are replaced by ceramic or aluminium in hospitality kitchenware
Potential for learning or transfer
This project can be developed in other events similar to Greencities-S-moving. Only if we know the different wastes and consumptions that occur in the celebration of an event, can we eliminate those that are not necessary and replace the others, with more sustainable materials and operations.
