About this good practice
Vara Saeveski is established in 2000 and is today producing 120 000 cubic meters of sawn material in a year. The company is a medium sized and majority of its output is exported. The sawn timber is produced from softwood logs for construction, furniture production and timber manufacturing.
The company is implementing a complex investment project during which among other an irrigation field for the logs is established to reducing the quality loss of input material. This leads to a higher humidity level in wood scraps (branches, chips, savings, bark) that could be used otherwise for heat production. Driven by this the current dry wood boiler house is replaced with a wet wood waste boiler that enables the maximum usage of waste wood as renewable resource for heating. The new boiler (6 MW) will be equipped with scrubbers leading to heat production efficiency of 95% (improvement by 20%). This leads to improved energy efficiency for the production facility as a whole.

Resources needed
7,1 M€ for total investment. Grant 2,2 M€ by Estonian Ministry of Environment’s measure “Resource efficiency of enterprises” from the Structural Funds of EU. Measure supports investments in resource-efficient solutions and resource audit of enterprise - prerequisite for investment aid.
Evidence of success
New more efficient wet wood boiler with scrubbers should increase heat production efficiency to 95% (20% improvement) and helps maximize usage of wet waste wood generated in wood processing.
Potential for learning or transfer
Potential transfer to other wood processing facilities, facilities that generate wet wood waste or are using wet wood chips in their boilers.
