About this good practice
ELDIA is the largest waste management and recycling company in Northern Greece. It was founded in 1997, and operates out of its privately owned facilities in Neohorouda, Thessaloniki.
Circular Economy actions:
There are two separate actions implemented:
Wood waste- ELDIA utilize a set of wood shredders and screens in order to process broken pallets, tree branches, and plywood into an acceptable size biomass that is used as an alternative fuel in the cement industry. Within 2021, they are expecting a license to build and operate a biomass to energy plant.
Expired foods- ELDIA process all expired foods (dairy and solid) through a de-packaging facility. The content is forwarded to a biogas facility, whereas the packaging is forwarded to a Recycling Sorting Plant in order to sort and bale all different types of recyclables (plastic, metal, glass, aluminum).

Evidence of success
Thousands of tones of wood and more than 5 tones of food were recycled otherwise ending up in landfills.
