Zero cigarette butts on the floor
About this good practice
Cigarette butts are one of the most common items found on the beaches of Portugal. This problem is also part of other coastal countries. As Ocean Spirit takes place on the beach, the organization with this measure, intended to promote the use of biataki among visitors who smoke. The biataki is a portable ashtray made using materials. This good practice makes it possible to mitigate the impact of visitors who visit the event and make them aware of the use of this small portable ashtray on a daily basis. This solution has an impact on the promotion of beaches and the preservation of marine and coastal ecosystems.
Resources needed
- €1067.64 for the purchase of 1000 units. from biataki
- +/- 100€ for communication materials
- reuse of water pipes for ashtrays. In these equipments, visitors to the event could dump the cigarette butts stored in their biataki
Evidence of success
With the availability and use of biatakis we can prevent 10,000 cigarettes from being placed on the floor (estimate based on the average number of cigarettes consumed in a day=10 cigarettes a day).
Potential for learning or transfer
This good practice is easy to apply in other events, whether in a beach or city context. Most of the butts that appear on the beaches travel through the cities, the sewers and the rivers, until they reach the beach and the sea. The availability of biataki can be seen as a useful gift to offer to the participants of the events as it allows their daily use.
