This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
The Zsuzsi railway system was built more than 130 years ago. First it was used as a railway system for timber transporting, then for commuting from the peri-urban areas to Debrecen. Later (from 1980’s), the railway system became a tourist attraction – during the communist era it was called Pioneer’s Railway (according to the communist Pioneer movement). After the fall of communism the need to improve of the existing infrastructure became crucial. The railway nowadays is operated by a non-profit corporation and owned by the Municipality. The railway now is used for awareness-raising purposes among the visitors (primarily for young pupils) in order to draw their attention to the natural values of Debrecen’s woodlands. Around the terminus station new infrastructure elements were built in the last 10 years: the House Of Nature & Observatory, a look-out tower, an educational path in the forest, open-air stage etc. ¬ thus the surroundings of the terminus station has become an eco-touristic centre for visitors.
The functional change of Zsuzsi railway is an excellent example of how infrastructure elements previously used for other purposes (transporting, commuting) could be transferred in order to enhance the importance of natural and cultural heritage on a local level.

Evidence of success
1. Cultural heritage: It is the oldest narrow-gauge railway system in Hungary and still operating.
2. The railway line is in a woodland area of Debrecen, that is part of the city’s natural heritage.
3. Around the terminus station visitors can find different attractions: look-out tower, the House of Nature&Observatory, a fish pond, playgrounds, Forest School.
4. Raising awareness about natural and cultural heritage is a key element of the good practice.
5. At about 20 000 visitors/year

Potential for learning or transfer
This good practice is an example of how an existing brown infrastructure that had previously served for other purposes (timber transporting, commuting), could be transformed into a tourist attraction. An example of how a municipality’s policy can change in terms of operating. Furthermore, it can be a good example of how a local community tries to save the cultural heritage of its settlement. In addition, due to the attractions developed near the terminus station, natural and cultural heritage can be linked through this good practice. As a significant proportion of railway visitors are young pupils/children, awareness-raising about natural and cultural heritage protection is also an important and transferable element of good practice.
