About the project
Islands are vulnerable to climate change while they mainly use fossil fuels for covering their energy needs. They have fragile eco-systems which often are threatened by over-tourism which has adverse impacts on their natural resources. However, they have abundant renewable energy resources which can be used for covering their energy requirements.
The proposed project aims to promote the development of carbon neutral islands having net-zero carbon emissions in Europe. The proposed methodology includes the elimination of the net-carbon emissions due to energy use in the sectors of: a) electricity generation, b) heat and cooling production, and c) insular transportation as well as in transportation to and from the islands.
The required green energy technologies are mature, reliable, cost-effective already used in many sectors. Successful polices and good practices already exist in many islands which can be transferred in other islands. The project will follow a holistic approach.
