About the project
Under current legislation, methods of thermal water use in Hungary are allowed to discharge the used water into surface water bodies, such as drainage canals. In addition to dissolved substances, the discharge of thermal water into surface waters also poses risks due to thermal, salinity and pH loads.
Large-scale thermal water extractions can negatively affect both the quantitative status of affected groundwater bodies and the quality of surface water bodies. These problems could be solved if the used thermal water was treated in ‘cooling ponds’ before being discharged into other water bodies. Furthermore, large-scale thermal water extractions could also be partly compensated by the application of reinjection.
Within this project, sampling would be carried out in areas where thermal water is discharged into surface water bodies. Based on physical, chemical and biological data obtained from the samples, measures could be developed to improve and/or protect the quality of our waters.
