About the project
The Emission Trading System (ETS) is an important tool for the European Union to reduce carbon emissions from big polluters. However, due to extensive lobbying from the private sector the current ETS is not effective enough. Carbon prices remain too low while too many emission rights remain in the market.
In order to do something about this WISE wants to set up a citizen lobby. Following the principles of Deep Democracy we want to organize events where citizens can talk about what a fair CO2 price would be, and how the ETS could be more fair and effective. Participants will be informed about the intricacies of ETS legislation by experts and will have the chance to discuss with citizens from other parts of Europe through online dialogues.
The goal is to collectively come up with concrete policy proposals for an alternative ETS more favorable to citizens themselves. With the upcoming EU elections in 2024 this is the right moment to activate citizens and push for a better ETS.
