About the project
The key objective of this project is to prepare new nanomaterials with sensing and adsorptive abilities to detect environmental contaminants, using non-recyclable PET bottles. PET bottles collected in rivers and oceans are currently not recyclable and constitute an environmental problem. However, by chemcial hydrolysis it is possible to extract the terephthalic acid from these bottles, for use in the preparation of new nanomaterials. This project aims to improve the hydrolysis process of these plastics through microwave assistance and ohmic heating, and to reuse the extracted terephthalic acid in the preparation of high-performance materials for sensing and remediation purposes.
