About the project
The project aims to promote net-zero emission agricultural greenhouses in Europe. Modern agricultural greenhouses are energy-intensive production systems requiring large amounts of energy for covering their energy needs.
Several green low- or zero- carbon energy technologies can be used in them providing heat, cooling and electricity. These include solar and wind electricity, solar thermal energy, solid biomass burning for heat production, CHP systems and use of ambient heat with energy efficient heat pumps for heat and cooling production. It should be noted that:
- The solar irradiance in many EU regions is high,
- The green energy technologies which can be used in greenhouses are mature, reliable and cost-effective,
- These technologies can be used in small- or large-size agricultural greenhouses.
- Elimination of carbon emissions in greenhouses is necessary for achieving the target of net-zero carbon economy by 2050.
